I Introduction of Elastomeric Bridge Bearing 1.Elastomeric Bearings and Strip

A bearing consists of rubber layers separated by vulcanized steel- plates. A rubber cover is fitted around this assembly.
Natural rubber or Chloroprene rubber is used for the layers.
Elastomeric Bearings provide an excellent economic solution for applications where structure movements, longitudinal, transverse and rotational are too small to moderate. They provide vibration isolation and are generally simple to install.
In strip form they can be laid along a diaphragm to support multiple beams.
Plain pads are available in standard or special sizes. Laminated types provide a robust bearing for larger structures and can also be configured in sliding types.

Natural rubber is not too sensitive to changes in temperature and shows only slight growth in deformation, over the period of deformation at a constant load (low creep). Natural rubber is highly resistent against ozone, ageing, UV and chemical effects.

2. Elastomeric bearing pads

Elastomeric bearing pads have become the standard for both steel and concrete bridge structures throughout China. They are reliable, inexpensive, and maintenance-free with a service life that typically exceeds that of the bridge superstructure itself.
Simply put, the bearing transfers vertical loads from the superstructure to the substructure while allowing limited horizontal movement (for thermal expansion and contraction of the bridge's structural girders), as well as rotational movement of the supported members.
In China, most bearing pads are made of either natural rubber or polychloroprene (Neoprene). Both of these compounds have been time-proven over several decades. With the addition of internal steel reinforcement layers, the load capacity of the bearing increases dramatically. Bridge design engineers can specify the size and configuration of a bearing to accommodate the specific load, shear, and rotational requirements at each point.

Bearings with a large number of steel shims relative to the overall volume of rubber can handle higher loads and shear forces. By contrast, bearings with wider spacing of the steel shims can provide excellent vibration isolation characteristics, and are often used in theaters and concert halls. By manipulating a small number of variables, engineers can design an elastomeric bearing to suit most any application.
3. Elastomeric bearings

Elastomeric bearings normally consist of a number of rubber layers separated by steel plates normally molded in pads or strips and are ideally suited for small structures to accommodate movements by deformation shear and rotations. Elastomeric bearings provide an excellent economic solution for applications where structure movements, longitudinal, transverse and rotational are small, provide vibration isolation and are generally simple to install.
